I started the year 2016 with a guiding principle of “more art, less fear”. I came up with this because last year I was working in a rather negative environment (I was in a design agency). I didn’t get to explore my creativity and was bounded by my superiors’ taste and expectations and even though it was an amazing learning opportunity, I knew I didn’t belong there. This year, I left. I was determined to make art no matter what. And I think it’s safe to say that I successfully accomplished my resolution.
Even though my day job now is not in the creative field, I got to create a lot more than I did in 2015. I also started this blog, which was a huge step into achieving my resolution and I never once regretted it. So, if your resolution for 2017 is to explore or improve your creative side, I’d like to share a few tips that might help you! These tips basically revolve around reminding myself of these three points:
1. There are always things to improve
Setting my mind to think that everything in my life, career, relationship, can be improved. There are even aspects that we sometimes look past that can actually be made better. This mindset helped to always ask myself “what can I do to make this better?”, “is there any other way to improve this?”. Know that the base of creativity is problem solving. When there is a problem, there is always an opportunity to be creative. Maybe you can start picking a theme for your Instagram feed, start writing better titles on your blog posts, spice up the way you dress?
2. There is always time for new experience
Regularly exposing myself to new things helped me to ask more questions, be more curious and more adventurous. For me, it is through watching movies and visiting new cafes or restaurants. My main muse in life has always been animated movies as I find that they can be interpreted personally and can spark the inner imaginative child in me. But this year I tried to get out of my comfort zone and watch other stuffs, which gave me lots of new insights. I think experiencing new things is not only fun to do but is also an investment to our creativity. So don’t be afraid and go out there and seize new experience!
3. Anyone can create
Be it through cooking, writing haikus, arranging flowers, putting makeup on your face, anyone and I mean anyone can create. When I push myself to create, I push my brain to think further and it would normally create something that is very unique, my own creation. A lot of you may think that “oh, I’m just not a creative person in general” but I think it’s just a matter of perspective and figuring out what you are best at. So again, remember that there’s always something to improve and something new to learn. I’m sure you’ll end up being even more creative than you think you can be.
As for my own resolution, since I have already accomplished my resolution for 2016, I have come up with a new resolution for 2017 which is to see more. See new places, more people, the good in others, bigger opportunities and just experience more of life. What about you? What’s your new year’s resolution for 2017?
